Feel Alive and be Happy

Updated: Aug 29, 2019

Like Icarus who flew too near the sun causing the wax of his wings to melt led to his death. So it can be with knowledge, an excess of knowledge in an unawakened mind will cause the knowledge acquired to destroy the individual who wields that knowledge.

In Greek mythology, Icarus was the son of the famous craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth. They were imprisoned in a tower by King Minos.

Clever Daedalus managed to create two sets of wings for himself and his son, that were made of feathers glued together with wax. He taught Icarus how to fly and warned him not to fly too high, which would cause the wax to melt, nor too low, which would cause the feathers to get wet with sea water.

Together, they flew out of the tower towards freedom. However, Icarus blinded by the power of the knowledge he had acquired, ignored his father's education, and started flying higher and higher.

Unfortunately for him under the heat of the scorching sun, the wax melted. Icarus's wings dissolved and he fell into the sea and drowned.

The area of the sea where he fell took the name Icarian Sea after him, while a nearby island was named Icaria.

Knowledge is like a light which dispels the darkness of our ignorance. However too much knowledge like too much light can blind us to everything except that one shining point.

We are all born pure, innocent and ignorant. By acquiring knowledge we can grow out of our ignorance. Confusing innocence with ignorance, the tragedy is, we also lose our innocence.

Innocence provides wonder and nothing kills wonder like excessive knowledge.

Knowledge is a double edged sword. In the unawakened mind it produces an arrogant individual who can only create problems and a trail of destruction. In the innocent mind it continues to generate wonder.

As Human knowledge has grown incredibly vast, our humanity and spirituality seems to have proportionately shrunk.

This situation has made us into a dull, boring, argumentative, ugly, dogmatic, dysfunctional humanity. Yet we persist in investing more and more in mass indoctrination through organised religion and so called modern education. We are producing hordes of over-informed / misinformed arrogant and chauvinistic people.

We need knowledge that awakens us and and not that merely fills us.

Filling is a matter of quantity, and awakening is a matter of quality.

When we are filled we become closed minded, pompous, arrogant and rude, invariably failing in the end.

When we awaken, we realise how little we know and that makes us open, friendly, patient and humble which will take us far.

'I have let go of excess filling and have embraced awakening'. This has made me feel more human and alive'
