After the results of the American Presidential elections of 2016 were announced, like many others I too was confused. The results said that Trump had won even though Hillary won more votes. I thought I would d some research and share with my readers
Reason is American founders created a system called the 'Electoral College'. A system
that ensure that all the States of America were fairly represented. Thus preventing a few very densely populated areas speak for the whole of the nation and hijack of the vote.
Lets look at some statistics to understand why Trump won.
There are 3,141 counties in the United States.
Trump won 3,084 of them. Clinton won 57.
There are 62 counties in New York State. Trump won 46 of them. Clinton won 16.
Clinton won the popular vote by approx. 1.5 million votes. In the 5 counties that encompass New York City, (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Richmond & Queens). Clinton won 4 of these counties and received well over 2 million more votes than Trump. Trump won only one of the 5 counties namely Richmond.
Therefore these 5 counties alone, more than accounted for Clinton winning the popular vote of the entire country. These 5 counties comprise 319 square miles, whereas the United States is comprised of 3,797,000 square miles.
Now its understandable why the electoral college system exists.
Its designed to prevent skewed outcomes based on mere numbers in particular areas. The vote should represent all people of America and not just some very densely populated cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc.
